The Brooks Academy History
The Brooks Academy has its foundation as “The Brooks Homeschool and Tutoring Academy,” in 2004. The vision came from an experienced educator who came to an overwhelming epiphany; no matter how much time, energy or money she spent supporting her children’s education in the public AND private school systems, they still failed to meet her child’s needs.
What are these needs? Is school just about completing assignments and getting a piece of paper? Every loving parent knows better than to reduce their child’s academic experience to a ‘cookie cutter’ or a ‘status quo’ experience. The true need is this: That children should always feel encouraged, knowing that their God-Given goals can be reached, and their self- esteem should rise “Beyond the Stars”!
This awakening came after a series of being up until after midnight helping her then, Second Grade and Third Grade children with what many call “Pain” and Rigorous” homework assignments. But the problem was that she saw little improvement in performance or standardized test scores. The children were frustrated, the parents were stressed and the entire household was on edge and unhealthy.
There had to be a better way. There had to be a way that children could learn in a healthy way, that did not disrupt the peace within the home. Many psychologists state that Retention of concepts doesn’t last past 20 minutes. Armed with that fact and additional contemplation, out came the adopted Mission of the “The Brooks Academy”:
“A Healthy Child Can Learn for Their Future”
The term “Healthy” does not only define physical health, but also mental and environmental health. With the Brooks Academy, the academic pursuit shifts from a task-based system (where you just check of boxes), to a competence-based style to learning (where environment and experience play a huge part of learning). This is also why we stress a ‘results’ based education.
“Our Miss Brooks” prayed for many nights seeking God’s Grace and Favor to develop and discover a fun and exciting curriculum that would invite this healthy balance, while meeting the three essential needs: 1) to encourage students to want to advance to the next level of education, 2) to help students reach life goals and 3) to boost their self-esteem beyond the stars!
After much contemplation and deliberation, the Lord placed on her heart to start a homeschool and Tutoring Academy. The focus was to service the discouraged but ENGAGED parents and students who felt they would not succeed with traditional education.
She asked God for a “sign” that she was going in the right direction.
The sign came after the initial phases of homeschooling her own children. During one of their first history assignments, her children discovered that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Junior was a homeschool student and attended Morehouse College at the age of 15 Years.
“Our Miss Brooks” found her “sign” and continued to Homeschool her children. Then the requests starting coming in.
After the first week of her homeschooling her children; other families from her past employment literally appeared at her front door and asked that she homeschool their kids as well.
Though the organization began its roots in 1999, the academy was NOT officially named until 2004 because this was a new educational arena, though she was an experienced educator.
“Our Miss Brooks” graduated her first male student Robert Hammond at 16 years of age and female student Jessica McNally at 17 years of age.
Robert Hammond is currently a doctor and Jessica McNally works for her mother in their Financial Planning Business. She recently received her financial security license to “take over” the family business.
Moreover, to date, Miss Brooks son, Miles Karron Brooks Jr. Esq, is the youngest to graduate from “The Brooks Homeschool Academy” at 13 years nine months.
With over 350 graduates and 1500 tutees since inception, there are too many success stories to note. However, a collective survey in 2016 showed that 100% of Brooks Academy graduates pursued AND completed higher education studies. Of those who graduated in the past 4 years, they are continuing to pursue career, graduate or professional studies while working in notable professions.
As one can see; the “The Brooks Academy” family is still growing with a strong legacy of leaders.
